Pros:
The retail English R4DS I got came in the same package as pictured, except for the cyan/light blue color of the carrying strap & container. It's very easy to use: just drag & drop files from PC to micro SD. The main menu loads in 2 seconds, has brightness & soft-reset settings & lets you browse through every folder. It runs all the popular online & offline games I've tried & saves the WiFi settings & game progress. The freezing issue with some micro SDs & Castlevania PoR is non-existent. I love the theme customization: download & unzip themes into micro SD. The ability to load & bookmark ebooks or plain text files is a bonus: you don't need a computer or PDA to look up gamefaqs.com's guides while playing a RPG. It even goes back to your last bookmark in the book/file. The soft-reset resets the DS to the main menu. Best of all, the DS doesn't have to be flashed to a custom firmware. There's no risk in bricking the DS.
Cons:
Coming from a PSP background where I just hook up PSP to PC via USB to transfer data, it's an inconvenience to eject the very tiny micro SD & insert it into an SD adapter to transfer files. I've read about the spring issue with the R4SD. I think they should design a USB-to-R4DS adapter or a R4DS with USB connection. The transfer rate is slow, regular 900 kB/s or hi-speed 10 MB/s for micro SD VS regular 1.875 MB/s or hi-speed 10 MB/s for Memory Stick Pro Duo.
Other Thoughts:
The R4DS design is ingenius. The documentation could be better written: divide it into a quick-start guide & a user's manual with troubleshooting at the end, & it should be in Acrobat PDF format. Even the free OpenOffice can export to PDF.
Bottomline:
The R4DS is the best DS investment I've made. The low price includes shipping. The wait was about 2-3 weeks. Payments are handled by Paypal. DealExtreme answered all my emails. I'm getting a 2nd one for a friend.
